Case Study: Carbon Engineering
- Client: Carbon Engineering (CE)
- Award: Gold – Best Global Issues Communications Campaign at the 2019 Stevie Awards
Challenge
CE possessed a groundbreaking technology: removing CO₂ from the air via its Direct Air Capture (DAC) system, but in 2019 the company was largely unknown beyond its R&D roots. Yulu was engaged to elevate CE’s international profile, establish it as a leader in carbon-capture at scale, and support its aggressive funding goals.
Strategy
Yulu’s approach included:
- Identifying a timely hook: new research showing CE’s DAC cost < US $100 per tonne, crossing the threshold for cost-effective carbon capture
- Developing visual and PR assets: drone footage, TV interviews, showcasing the BC plant and the team
- Embargoing top-tier international media (Reuters, Bloomberg, Canadian Press, BBC, The Atlantic) to ensure high-impact launch day coverage
- Broad global distribution post-embargo across academic, trade, business and environmental media in 25+ countries
Results
- On launch day: story featured in 150 media outlets including The Economist, The Atlantic, Globe & Mail, National Geographic, BBC World, The New York Times, Boston Globe
- Within first month: 400+ media features, reaching ~1.9 billion people across 25 countries
- Within five hours: story became the most-read on BBC World and top-rank on Reddit (65,000 votes, 2,700 comments)
- By Q1 2019: CE achieved its investment fundraising target of USD $68 million
- Long-term: Yulu continues work; by end of 2022 CE had 6,000+ media mentions annually
